Scholarship Coverage
The following costs will be covered by the Chinese Government Scholarship University Program:

  • Tuition Fee
  • Free university dormitory or an allowance for lodging;
  • Stipend:
  • Undergraduates receive CNY 2,500 each month
  • Master’s students receive CNY 3,000 each month
  • Doctoral students receive CNY 3,500 each month.
  • Full medical insurance: CNY 800 each person per year.

Eligibility Criteria

  • This program is open to non-Chinese citizens
  • You must meet the requirements of the programs for which they are applying.
  • Education and age limitations (as of September 2023):
  • • Bachelor’s Programs: must be an academically excellent high school diploma or equivalent holder under the age of 25
  • • Master’s Programs: must be an academically excellent Bachelor’s degree or equivalent holder under the age of 35 •
  • Doctoral Programs: must be an academically excellent Master’s degree or its equivalent holder under the age of 40
  • Applicants to Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) or foreign language studies programs are not eligible.
  • Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS) awardees are not allowed to accept any other scholarships (except one-time bonuses) sponsored by Chinese governments of different levels.
  • You must be in good mental and physical health.

Language Requirements
Requirements for Chinese proficiency in Chinese-medium programs

  • Applicant for humanities, economics, management, and the law must have a Chinese language proficiency certificate of HSK 5 with a score of 210 or higher.
  • Applicants for sciences, engineering, and medicine must have a certificate of HSK band 4 with a score of 210 or higher.
  • Applicants who have completed all Chinese courses in high school or during their previous degree studies are waived from the HSK certificate requirement but must provide a high school and university medium-of-instruction certificate.

English proficiency requirements for English-medium programs

  • You must present a TOEFL iBT certificate with a score of 80 or higher or an IELTS Academic certificate with an overall score of 6.0. TOEFL DI Code for XMU is C310.
  • Applicants who have completed all English courses in high school or previous university degrees are exempt from the TOEFL iBT or IELTS certificate requirement. But a high school and university medium-of-instruction certificate are required. This requirement is waived for native English speakers.

Important Notes
Language Requirements:

  • Any applicants who do not fulfil the entry requirements for the Chinese proficiency level and wish to take corrective Chinese courses before majoring in Chinese also must present the HSK certificate when applying.
  • Applicants for humanities, economics, management, law, arts, and traditional Chinese medicine must have a Chinese language proficiency certificate of HSK band 4 with a score of 180 or above.
  • Applicants for sciences, engineering, and medicine must have a certificate of HSK band 3 with a score of 180 or higher.
  • They could only begin the significant study if they passed the required HSK test within the first year and met the entry requirements of the relevant degree program.

Scholarship Recipients:

  • Scholarship recipients must take part in the annual review per the scholarship’s management regulations.
  • Those who pass the review can apply for and receive scholarships in the following academic year.
  • Scholarship recipients who do not pass the review will have their scholarships suspended or denied.
  • The particular regulations and methods of the annual review shall be governed by the most recent notice issued in the current year.

How to Apply for this program?

  • You must apply online here (Program Category: Type B; XMU Agency Number: 10384) and print the Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarships. The Scholarship Application Form must be in Chinese or English and signed by the applicant.
  • You must fill out another online application here and upload a scanned copy of the Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarships. Paper application materials are not required to be mailed.

Note: Scholarship applications will be considered after the applicant has been admitted to one of the XMU academic programs approved by the China Scholarship Council.

Selection and Result Notification

  • A thorough analysis of the applicant’s academic record, language proficiency, overall merits, research achievements, and comments from their prospective supervisor will be conducted.
  • The names of shortlisted applicants will be forwarded to the China Scholarship Council for final approval.
  • In August, the final results will be accessible here.
