Opportunity Description

Joint Japan and World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) applications are now available to international student. Holding the nationality of certain developing countries, applicants with professional experience and past supporting backgrounds of their countries’ development can apply for JJ/WBGSP. To be qualified, the applicants should apply to a master’s degree program in a development-related topic.

JJ/WBGSP offers 45 participating master’s programs scholarships in 27 universities in Europe, the U.S., Africa, Japan, and Oceania. These scholarships are subject to available funding, and the candidates can study in development fields, including tax policy, infrastructure management, and economic policy management. Those who have not received an admission letter from the participating master’s programs are not qualified to apply for the JJ/WBGSP in 2023.

World Bank Group (WBG) has been offering scholarship programs in partnership with the Japanese Government since 1987 for students of developing countries to further their graduate studies in different countries.

Benefits of JJ/WBGSP

Successful applicants will benefit from the JJ/WBGSP as follows:

  • A travel cost of round-trip economy class;
  • Allowance of US $500 for each trip;
  • A full tuition fee for the student;
  • Basic health insurance;
  • Monthly stipend for accommodations, food, books, etc.

The following costs are the responsibility of the students:

  • Visa application costs;
  • Expenses of a scholar’s family members;
  • Extra-curricular training or courses;
  • Course costs that do not meet the minimum credits;
  • Language training which is not part of the graduate program;
  • Additional travel throughout the program course;
  • Research, field trips, supplementary educational materials, participation in seminars or workshops, or internships;
  • Educational equipment like computers;
  • Resident permit fee

Note: The allowance amount differs depending on the host country.

Eligibility Criteria for JJ/WBGSP

To apply for JJ/WBGSP applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • You must be from a World Bank member developing country;
  • Must not hold dual citizenship of any developed country;
  • You must be mentally and physically healthy;
  • Must have a university degree at least three years before the application deadline;
  • You must have paid working experience of at least three years;
  • You must be currently working in development-related work full-time paid position. The exception is with the nationals of a country conflict states and fragile;
  • Must have applied and got an unconditional offer from a minimum of JJ/WBGSP preferred university master programs foreign applicants’ home country or the country of residence;
  • You must not be World Bank employees and staff or family members of World Bank staff;
  • After completing the program, the applicant should return to their home country.

Selection Criteria

The selection committee will evaluate the applications against the following criteria:

  • Professional experience quality (30 %)
  • Professional recommendations (30 %)
  • Commitment to their home country (30 %)
  • Education background Quality (10%)

How to Apply for JJ/WBGSP?

For a successful application, all candidates must read the requirements and eligibility criteria and then follow the instructions:

  • First, apply to one or more of the JJWBGSP programs;
  • Prepare required documents;
  • Applicants of the JJ/WBGSP partner program scholarship must apply to one or more of the Partner programs;
  • Submit their application to the university;
  • After the application review, the partner master program shortlists eligible candidates and invites them to apply for the Scholarship;
  • Applicants of the preferred program can apply directly to the program.
